United for Health
The
United Nations Club recently concluded a successful health camp as
part of their rural development project in Sandalankawa. This was held
at Sandalankawa, near the town of Dankotuwa in the Gampaha District on
the 24th and the 25th June.
Around 1000 patients were treated at this camp, where free medicine
was also distributed. The club also oversees the refurbishment of the
local school’s electricity grid as part of their rural development
project. The Ternion congratulates the UNC for the success in
community service projects.
A worthy Exchange
The Interact Club organized a Youth Exchange, between the 20th
and 23rd of June, during which five under-privileged
children from Galle, Kegalle and Gampaha were brought to the city, and
housed at the College dormitory. They were given a tour of the
College, and an opportunity to savour some of the sights and sounds of
Colombo. The five were taken bowling at Excel World, shopping at
Majestic City and even got to see the action-thriller 'Mission
Impossible 3'. All in all the children who had never seen a life
beyond agricultural lifestyles were definitely given the time of their
life.
Art for All!
The
Art Club organized an Art Competition on the 3rd of June,
open to the students in the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools. This gave
the students studying either Western Music or English Literature a
chance to reveal their artistic talents, and the opportunity was
seized with great eagerness. We congratulate the winners.
The Junior Scientists have their day!
The
Junior Science Society had its annual Science Day on the 14th
of July at the college. The Chief Guest for the evening was Dr. Ruwan
Weerasinghe. He is the director of the School of Computing, University
of Colombo.
The
day’s programme was based on “nanotechnology”. The day was a major
success with guest speakers enlightening us on the subject, a
multimedia presentation competition and various entertainment items.
Leo Youth Challenge!
The Leo Club is to organize a Youth Challenge in the month of July.
The Challenge will have participants teaming up into groups of five
each; these groups will then carry out various projects (E.g.:
Shramadana, Urban Development, awareness) starting in the month of
July. By the end of the month they will submit
a report as to what they have done (and how well
they have done it!) to the Club. These in turn will be submitted to
the Lions Association of Sri Lanka, which will decide the winners.
The winning team will receive a cash prize of Rs. 25000. Since the
Challenge will be rewarding to both our community and those who take
part, all are encouraged to enter.
A call for Conservational posters!
The
Environment Conservation Society will be holding a Poster Competition
for the students of the Lower School with posters being accepted from
the 7th to the 10th of July.
The
theme of the competition is “Save the Environment for the Future”.
Preservers Given New Life
The Society for the Preservation of Thomian Traditions was revived on
the 23rd of June. At the meeting chaired by Mr. M. D.
Maurice, the master-in-charge, it was agreed
to take on the Sub-Warden's suggested name for the society :'The
Thomian Union'. The office-bearers were then voted in, and the new
society pledged itself to the preservation and continuation of STC’s
great traditions. The Union decided that its first project would be
the refurbishment of the Thomian Museum.
Debater in Cardiff
Deshan Pushparajah was among the five students selected for the World
Debating Championships, which is to be held in Cardiff, Wales.
This is the first time that Sri Lanka took part in an International
Tournament held in the British Parliamentary Debating style. An
inter-school debating tournament was held by The Moot Court and The
Debating Society of the Colombo University. Pushparajah came out on
top with five others who were chosen to represent the country. We
congratulate him on his achievement. |
